SHARING MARY’S MISSION
The Board of Directors of the Association of Marianist Universities (AMU) announces a national search for an Executive Director. The Association of Marianist Universities supports, promotes and advances Marianist higher education. AMU seeks to achieve its mission by fostering formation in the Catholic and Marianist educational traditions at its three member institutions – Chaminade University, St. Mary’s University and the University of Dayton. AMU represents Marianist higher education at the national and international levels. The Association promotes cooperation, collaboration and the exchange of experience and information among its member institutions so that they can better achieve their missions and enable them to be leaders in American and Catholic higher education.
The AMU Board of Directors seeks an energetic, mission-driven leader who will be enthusiastic about mission and values of Catholic Marianist education. The next executive director will build on the achievements of Brother Tom Giardino. S.M., who has provided successful leadership upon his retirement in June 2025 and pursue new directions in response to a dynamic higher education environment. This full-time position requires some travel, and the office will be located at one of the universities.

November is Black Catholic History Month and it's an opportunity to remember in a special way the heroic men and women of African descent who pioneered our Catholic faith.
Six Black Americans are being considered for sainthood by the Catholic Church and any one of them will be the United States’ first Black saint. They are (clockwise from upper left) Julia Greeley (c. 1840-1918), recognized as Denver’s “Angel of Charity” for her work with the poor; Mother Mary Lange (c. 1784-1882), founder and first superior of the Oblate Sisters of Providence; Henriette DeLille (1812-1862), founder of the Sisters of the Holy Family order in New Orleans in 1842; Pierre Toussaint (1766-1853), credited as the father of Catholic Charities in New York; Thea Bowman (1937-1990), the only Black American member of the Franciscan Sisters of Perpetual Adoration; and Augustus Tolton (1854-1897), the first known Black American to serve as a Catholic priest in the U.S.

The Marianist martyrs of Madrid, Blesseds Fr. Miguel Léibar Garay, Br. Sabijno Ayastuy Errasti, Br. Joaquín Ochoa Salazar, and Br. Florencio Arnáiz Cejudo, lived through the scourge known as the "Red Terror" during the Spanish Civil War in the 1930's. Communist “militiamen” violently worked to eradicate Catholicism in the cities they controlled by torching churches and executing leaders, religious or lay.
The persecution became so severe that even possession of a rosary warranted the death penalty. In the face of such grave danger, these four Marianists made the commitment to stay in war-torn Madrid and continue to minister to the faithful. These men are honored by the Society of Mary on November 6 of the Church calendar.
